Jade Jeremiah Lyngdoh

Jade is Director of the Centre for Policy.

 

He was educated at National Law University, Jodhpur (B.A, LL.B with honours in Constitutional Law), where he was awarded a scholarship by Meta.

 

He has held a fellowship at the National Law School of India University, which supported the Government of Meghalaya by curating policy solutions to address complex social and economic challenges in the state.

 

He leads the Centre’s strategy and institutional development, and has cemented its partnerships with international organisations, government agencies, academic institutions and civil society networks.

 

At the Centre, Jade’s research has focused on constitutional law, human rights and criminal law. He has produced expert submissions to United Nations Special Rapporteurs, contributed to litigating briefs before the Supreme Court of India, and provided authoritative legal analysis to Government.

 

Beyond research, his work at the Centre encompasses strengthening the capacities of grassroots stakeholders, advancing environmental protection through legislative reform, and advising on institutional reform.

 

His has been cited in submissions before the Supreme Court of India (concerning the Presidential Reference on the constitutional powers of the President and Governors), and has provided input to international organisations such as Human Rights Watch.

​Earlier in his career, he served as Research Assistant to a member of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom, then chaired by Amal Clooney, contributing to its landmark report on international standards and blasphemy laws.

 

He has acted as petitioner in proceedings before the Indian courts to strengthen privacy protections (Jade Jeremiah Lyngdoh v. Union of India & Ors), and has utilised the Right to Information Act to expose executive-ordered internet shutdowns and the deployment of facial-recognition technology in the absence of statutory safeguards.

His commentary on constitutional law, human rights, and other public issues has been published in India’s most respected newspapers including The Wire, The Telegraph, and the Hindustan Times.
